To me, Tony Levin's name is inextricably connected to Emmett Chapman's "Chapman Stick", the incredible bass and melody instrument I "discovered" in the eighties. Listening to the albums of King Crimson (e.g. "Discipline") and Peter Gabriel ("Plays Live"), I wondered where the low, filtered, percussive sounds and the weird, compressed guitar-like tones were coming from. Until I saw both King Crimson and Peter Gabriel's band live. I was totally impressed by Levin's strange looking instrument, and even more by the way he played it. The 9th of May finally gave me the chance to meet the man in person, shake hands, have a quick chat, and see him play in a small, intimate venue instead of a stadium. Stickists Ron Baggerman, Frank Leurs and me were allowed to sit in on the sound check, which was very nice. Being a musician myself, I know how annoying it can be to have strange people around when you are trying to get your sound right for the gig. And that gig was excellent! I'm usually not very fond of support acts, but this one - stick player Tom Griesgraber and drummer Jerry Marotta, presenting their new album "Waking the Day" - was exactly what was needed to warm up the audience. The Tony Levin band consists of Tony Levin himself on basses and stick, keyboard player Larry "Synergy" Fast, drummer Jerry Marotta, guitarist Jesse Gress and keyboard player Pete Levin (yes, Tony's brother). Of course they played some new material from their new album "Resonator" - which was, sadly, not yet available at the time. The band's double album "Double Espresso" does give a good impression of the rest of the set. Some "oldies" were included, too, like Peter Gabriel's "On the Air", Back in N.Y.C. and some Crimson stuff, like "Elephant Talk." Jerry Marotta and Tony Levin did all of the singing - and they did it very well. Although Marotta is certainly no Gabriel, and Tony does not have the "weirdness" of , e.g., Adrian Belew, they knew how to give those songs the right atmosphere. As an introduction of their band they even did a "Barber Shop" quartet - very funny! All in all I enjoyed this evening immensely, not in the least because I met some wonderful people, and Frank Leurs let me sleep in his office, so I didn't have to leave early. Thanks guys!
