  • Friday night 2 April 2004:
Teacher concert in De Kade in Zaandam. We had a great Rhythm tandem consisting of drummer extra-ordinary Carel Vrieling who runs the drumschool Rhythm Change in Zaandam and
percussionist Rick Burgemeestre from Maracazz from Alphen a.d. Rijn who was in wonderful shape and kept everybody inspired

Frank Leurs started the night with presenting and playing an original tune on his Grand Midified Stick. Then it was Jim's turn to take on the eager waiting crowd. Jim did well, although it was though for him, since his voice was not in great shape, but this way he did a great Tom Waits impression:). Luckely his Stickplaying didn't suffer and he shared great music with us.

Andre Pelat showed again that he's a man with many hats. Although he'a known for his mastery of classical music he's no slouch when it comes to Jazz, Latin or Rock. Andre surprised us also when he played with Cecile Broche who's an excellent electric violin player from Belgium. this month (April) he's featured on www.stick.com as Stickplayer of the month. Keep up the good work Andre!

    Bob Culbertson

Bob Culbertson's mesmerizing way of playing Acoustic and Electric Stick left the audience with the impression that it wasn't gonna get any better than this!
He also played an interesting avantgarde improvisation with Andre , Cecile, Rick and Carel.

-I'm not sure if it got any better (I'll let the other's be the judge of this:)) but finally I could make some noise as well!
We ended with a tune played as a grand finale with Jim, Andre, Bob, Rick, Carel and me playing some mean funk!

A nice surprise to see Stickist Karsten Roeth who runs the German Stick site from Germany in the audience who drove a long way just to see this concert. He is the organizer of the German Seminars.

  • Saturday 3 April 2004
It was hard to get up early after such a intensive fridaynight , don't ask me how we did it. We got the teacher's from the hotel and the participants from their "Dental Hotel" , unfortunately there were no showers there, and we found out at the end of the weekend that we could shower at the school! Oh well...at least next year we'll have a clean seminar:)

We finally made it in one piece to the Art-centre Fluxus But not after we raided the local bakkery of sandwiches and Turkish Pizza's!

    CMS picture

The tea and coffee at the School did their work and off we went. We had divided ourselves into 4 groups and start to get a grasp of the Stick Secrets which were presented by the very capable teachers.

CMS pictureCMS pictureCMS pictureCMS pictureCMS pictureCMS picture

At the end of the day Frank had arranged a surprise: a tour with a boat around Zaandam. Yes, a Dutch Treat it was, but in a more positive way:) , waterway, mills, etc. we've seen it all. The tour ended at the cafe De Toog where we had a delicious Indonesian Buffet.

I stayed in De Toog to play with drummer Juul du Perron , who played with a lot of inpiration, feeling and was very steady and focussed.
Frank also sang a few songs with us and got the crowd going, as he does usually.
Then Olivier Vuille from Switserland got up and performed some beatles oriented tunes. I saw him perform in Switserland for the first time and noticed great progress! I especially enoyed his version of Amsterdam a song by Jaques Brel which Olivier played especially for me, thanks Olivier!

In between Mathias Sorof played some inspiring tunes of his CDs and also Antoine Ratel from France who plays in Tarace Boulbawas funking the night away together with Juul Duperron on drums.

    CMS picture
In De Koninck Jim Lampi played with drummer Ben Rozema

In The Blacksmith you could enjoy Andre Pelat and violonist Cecile Broche

    CMS picture
In Gambrinus one could witness Bob Culbertson and Lex Bak on drums .

  • Sunday 5 April 2004
This time Stickist and participant Patrick van Hooijdonk was so kind to pick up the teachers from the hotel, so instead of 7hoo I could wake up at 8hoo. We still had slept only a few hours as everybody else, but the strong coffee did the trick.

Teachers and students were still very concentrated, although in the afternoon I noticed some yawning.....the silent witnesses of a few days of intensive studying, concerts, food and....beer.

    Carel Vrieling

The Blacksmith was the place for the Stick Jam Session. Drummer Carel Vrieling was again backing us in a solid way!
Frank and I started the night. Jim was grooving the hell out of the place as usual. Bob did a hypnotizing version of Little Wing. Andre was Jazzing as if his life depended on it.

Mathias Sorof from Germany played some very tasteful tunes, with a lot of feeling. His melody is very warm, a ballad he played gave me the goose bumps!

Then I played a short tune on the NS-Stick, maybe next time Stickist Stefan Huth from Germany should do this since I heard him play this and sounded better on this perticular instrument than I!

Antoine Ratel who plays in the French Funk Big Band Tarace Boulba got up and played with Francois Becot , they both funked up the place, you just had to dance to it!
It ended with me playing with Francois, he showed that besides being a clown he can also play. He showed me this weekend that he already had figured out a lot of stuff I play on his own.

I thank everybody for their inspiring presence and especially Frank Leurs, without his efforts it would've been impossible to organize this great event. Thanks also to Judy for her great spirit and ideas, Silvan Jongerius for the sound and more logistic things. Danielle for all the assistance.
And a big thanks to you : you, the participants , we're proud to have had you here, we're counting on you to be there next year!
And a very, very special gracias goes of course to Emmett Chapman for inventing this magic instrument and Yuta Chapman for all her hard work throughout the years.

    Stick together!

of hard work ahead to incorporate all we saw, heard and experienced on THE
    instrument)

CMS pictureCMS pictureCMS pictureCMS pictureCMS pictureCMS pictureCMS picture

Et le fun était au rendez-vous.
Ron Baggerman Rock stick, Bob Culbertson the Master, André Pelat ( c'est moi
World Stick Seminar à San Jose in California.

CMS pictureCMS pictureCMS pictureCMS pictureCMS pictureCMS picture

    A quel groove !
    A bientôt
